Back in the day Canarsie had only 2 schools, since its population was only around 5 or 6 thousand. P.S.114 was constructed before the turn of the century. The original school house was erected in the late 1800's and was known as "The Little Red School House". It was a small wooden one room structure on East 92 Street and Avenue J next to Grace Church. A few years later a fire destroyed the school. The present building was rebuilt and reopened in 1907 on School Lane and Smiths Lane (now known as Bay View Place) as there was no Remsen Avenue and Glenwood road back then. The school served Canarsie children from grades 5a – 8b. Today it serves children from kindergarten to grade 6. It is located at what are now Remsen Avenue and Glenwood Road. P.S.115 was also built before the turn of the century but was reconstructed in 1922. The schools only had 4 classrooms back in those days and serves children from grades1a-4b.The school is located on East 92 Street and Avenue M.

In 1935, Public School 242 was built on Flatlands Avenue and East 100 Street. 1953 saw Public School 260 “The Breukelen” constructed to accommodate the Breukelen Houses. In 1957, Public School 272 was built on Seaview Avenue and East 102 Street to accommodate the children of the newly constructed Bayview Houses and Seaview Village. As the community continued to grow in 1958, Junior High school 211 was built on East 100 Street and Avenue J and in 1959 Public School 279 was erected on east 104 Street and Avenue J.

In 1964 three new schools built in the Canarsie area. Public School 276 was built on East 83 Street and Avenue K, Isaac Bildersee Junior High School 68 was built on East 82 Street and Avenue J and Canarsie's first High School, Canarsie High School built on Rockaway Parkway and Avenue K. In 1970 Canarsie received its second High School. South Shore High School located on Flatlands Avenue and Ralph Avenue.
